A $35,000 Precision Remediation

In the environmental remediation industry, challenges can range from those that are geographically large, requiring scaled efforts, to those with a small footprint that require high-precision, nuanced solutions.

A recent 9-day project in New Hampshire perfectly illustrates the latter, highlighting the complexities involved in a home heating oil spill cleanup. It serves as a reminder for homeowners and heating oil delivery companies alike: when a tank fails, the timing and quality of the response determines the extent of damage and liability.

The Challenge: A Fieldstone Foundation & Tight Quarters

Green Site Services was called in when a homeowner discovered a release caused by a tank failure. Because the timeframe and volume of the leak were unknown, our team had to move quickly to assess the spread. We immediately hit our main challenge: the home was old, built on a fieldstone foundation, with a small, cramped basement.

This could have been a “nightmare scenario.” In a modern home with a poured concrete slab, remediation is often straightforward excavation. But with fieldstone, the stakes are much higher. Unlike a solid concrete wall, fieldstone is held together by gravity and aging mortar; digging too deep or too close can undermine the structural integrity.

The Strategy for a Home Heating Oil Spill Cleanup

To protect the home and minimize liability, our team had to be strategic. We couldn’t simply remove all the contaminated soil without risking foundation weaknesses. Here is how we navigated the home heating oil spill cleanup:

  • Targeted Excavation: We carefully removed 10.64 tons of impacted soil from accessible areas, precisely stopping where further digging would have impacted the stone walls.

  • Passive SVE Installation: Because safety required us to leave some residual oil in place near the foundation, we installed a Passive Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) system. This technology acts as a permanent “safety vent” for the ground, allowing oil vapors to safely escape away from the home and break down naturally without entering the living space.

  • Advanced Backfilling: Due to the limited access, we utilized a pump truck to place “flowable fill” (a self-leveling material) and to repour the concrete floor, ensuring a seamless, stable finish.

A Message to Our Partners in the Heating Oil Industry

When a customer experiences a spill, they are often at their most vulnerable—and they often look to their fuel provider for answers.

In this case, by providing a professional, clean, and highly coordinated remediation, we helped alleviate stress for the customer. We took extra precautions during the final concrete pour, using plastic barriers for the pump truck cleanout to leave the property exactly as we found it.  This level of professionalism in Environmental Services reflects well on the entire industry and helps maintain the trust you’ve built with your customers.

Partnering with Green Site Services means:

  • Protecting Your Reputation: We handle the “messy” side of the business with a level of care that shows the customer they are in good hands.

  • Expert Navigation of NH OPUF: We are experts in the New Hampshire On-Premise Use Facility (OPUF) program. This state-managed fund acts as “excess insurance” for homeowners, often funding cleanups like this $35,000 project when private insurance is unavailable or doesn’t cover the costs. Learn more about the NHDES OPUF program here.

  • Technical Ingenuity: From SVE systems to pump-truck backfilling, we have the tools to handle the most difficult residential layouts.

The Bottom Line

Whether you are a homeowner or a fuel dealer, an aging tank is a dormant liability. A tank failure can strain a homeowner’s budget and create a stressful situation for everyone involved.

While the best scenario is preventing a leak through routine inspections and proactive maintenance, we know accidents happen. That’s why Green Site Services has an emergency response team on call 24/7 to arrive quickly and minimize the damage. From immediate spill containment to managing a complex long-term recovery, we are here to provide a clear path forward.
